A town name Glashutte or in English meaning glassworks. Glashutte is a town which was formerly in East Germany. It stands for, in German, VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), it was a company owned by State of German Democratic Republic, or East Germany. Now famous with watchmaking where big names are there. Now GUB Glashutte does not exist anymore, the company now is known as Glashutte Original. Save some money to buy their watches !.

Now, I can figure out what logo is on the dial. That is logo of Petroleum Development of Oman. I suppose it is to commemorate 10 years of "doing well in business"...or... "special hand outs during annual dinner"...or..."given to those who have gallantly and tirelessly served for the company during that turbulent financial crisis"...or..."just a gift given to good customers and suppliers".........or......... . Edox...a pre/post war vintage

A true Swiss vintage, is in good working condition and keeping good time. Can wear this watch everyday to work or weekend. This caliber is made by FELSA engraved as "FW" "925". Size is 34mm including crown, it comes with a US made Speidel stainless steel expandable bracelet.

Dial is sandy brown, with the word GLISCOUR just above sub second. Could be an early gliscour balance wheel made using this material.

Dream Factory...the place where Grand Seiko is made

I found this article somewhere stashed on the internet, might be very interesting for all us dreaming to own a Grand Seiko. You might not be able or afford to own it now, but do not forget that dreaming of having a GS is not a bad thing. This is about a factory, the place where Grand Seiko is made. Nothing technical here, all are facts related to "the finest of a very fine Japanese watch". Start reading.
Tucked away in a seemingly remote wooded part of Japan, near the town of Morioka, sits a world-class watchmaking facility that has been quietly producing some of the world’s finest mechanical watches for over 70 years.

Called the Shizukuishi Watch Studio (check out a movie about this studio here), the workshop is distinctly different from any other watchmaking atelier in Europe. Each watchmakers’ desk is custom made out of a local wood called Iwayado Tansu and lacquered to a bright polish. The benches are all made to different heights – custom made specifically to the height of the individual watchmaker. Outside the studio hangs a large sign in Japanese stating “Building in Quality with Painstaking Care”.

Within these workshops, the caliber 9S watch movement series is produced and remains the iconic mechanical caliber of the Grand Seiko collection. In the final steps of the assembly of the 9S, each balance wheel is subjected to final adjustment in a surprising way to ‘lock-in’ the accuracy of the movement.

Rather than having a balance wheel with adjustable screws or a gyromax system, Seiko uses a labor intensive process that leaves very little room for trial and error. The watchmakers painstakingly remove tiny amounts of material from a solid balance wheel in order to perfectly adjust the watch the first time. The result is a balance wheel that is perfectly adjusted and cannot be modified from the beginning. The final adjustment can only be made with the hairspring, a process that is also done manually.

Once the watches are completed, they are subjected to a 17 day quality control test adjusting to temperature and 6 positions. In the end, Grand Seiko mechanical watches are accurate to -3 to +5 seconds per day compared to COSC at -4 to +6 seconds perday. Consequently, a mechanical Grand Seiko can hold its own with any Swiss chronometer.

To exemplify the degree of hand finishing that goes into a Grand Seiko, we were given the chance to participate in the “Varnishing Experience”. We were each given a Grand Seiko rotor with our initials hand engraved by Seiko’s master engraver and we were taught how to varnish the engraved Grand Seiko logo with shellac before final polishing. It was a nice way to see how the engraved portions of a rotor or bridge are elegantly colored – and it also made for some interesting photo ops.

The second watchmaking studio we visited was in the depths of Japan’s central mountains near Nagano. Known as the Shinshu Studios, this massive workshop is where a number of high-grade Seikos calibers areassembled including the Spring Drive 9R series and high grade quartz 9F series, used exclusively for Grand Seiko.

The Shinshu studios are composed of three workshops: the Mastery“Takumi” Studio, the jewelry setting studio (mostly for Credor), and the Micro-Artist studio. Here we learned how about the various finishes that are used on Seiko bridges, plates, rotors, etc. such as perlage, sunray finish, circular finish, and even Geneva Stripes. We also saw where Seiko dials are made from scratch for Grand Seiko and we visited Seiko’s most exclusive high-end watchmaking atelier.

Hidden under a flight of stairs, a la Harry Potter, a workshop of small size and massive importance produces some of the greatest works of Japanese horological art. It is simply known as the Micro-Artist Studio. It is within this studio, the master craftsmen produce the Credor Sonnerie, a repeating wristwatch that you have to listen to in order to understand.

On the wall is a small sign written in Japanese that shares the philosophy of this studio “Our watches bring long-term satisfaction, the feeling of Japanese and are reliable to wear until Grandchildren.” Truly the words of the watchmakers, not the marketers.

"kore wa hon mono mukashi kara no Seiko desu", translated as "this is really an old Seiko". Seiko Fairway 21 Jewels, made somewhere in 1962, the first one-piece case made by Seiko. Caliber 760 is made by SEIKOSHA Kameido Factory. 18,000 BPH. Size of the watch is 35mm across. Case is gold plated.

Something interesting here : Exacto was produced by Schlup & Co, which was a subsidiary company of Rado Watch Co. The one that I have here is believed to be made circa 1950-1957. By looking at the movement, which is AS 1237/38, the movement itself was produced starting from 1950. It is 17 Jewels, manual winding with 18,000 BPH (5 beat per second, please do not compare this with Grand Seiko, El Primero, Citizen 7230 and other Hi Beat movements). They (RWC) probably manufactured complete watches and movements was assembled by Schlup & Co. From 1958 onwards, all watches produced were to carry RADO as brand name.

This is the "father" ? of Rado, Rado that we see today. It runs great on my wrist, now I start to believe that a good mechanical watch still runs great after half a century. Serviced by experience watchmaker. Willing to let it go at RM 1,100 negotiable, call or SMS if interested.

Note : This watch has fixed lugs, need good ribbon or leather strap to make it look better. The one that I have here is PVC and Russian made leather backing.

This watch using caliber Unitas 6326, made somewhere in the 1970's. Also refer to my posting on Unitas.

"Wehrmachtswerk" translated as "Movement for Armed Forces ?"and known for its robustness. Direct translation of Wehrmacht is "the armed forces of Germany", used between 1921-1945. "Wehr" means defence and "macht" means might. The story goes back in 1930's when the German government made an international call for tender to equip the Wehrmacht and to be used by all 3 main sections : Heer, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine (Army, Air Force and Navy). The task was to develop the best possible movement, it must be robust, large diameter, could last for several years and low maintenance. They wanted a large diameter so that the balance and gears could be quite big and therefore more durable. The movement should hold the time precisely and dependably. A lot of tests was made and in 1932, the only caliber that was accepted was AS 1130 (the above watch comes with Unitas 6326)

The only thing good about mechanical watch is, it unexpectedly lasts longer than any other electric watches. Once broken then fix it again, can be used for another decade. Rado President - limited edition

This is a manual winding Rado President, caliber AS 1702 (same as Dorley Supermariner). It was professionally cleaned, oiled and adjusted by an expert. Polished stainless steel case, very clean dial and magnified crystal. Size is 34mm across, without crown. I replaced a pair of new aftermarket leather band.

NOTE : It looks "as other common Rado" but production of this edition was limited to 2,000 units worldwide. Serial 11765. This watch was made between 1965 - 1967. One of them landed here, the one that you see above and below. A rare find and sought after model.

Edox Ebel Epos Eterna . All comes with the alphabet E. There's something special with the word E with those who created these brands. This is a 1980's Edox, I suppose between 1985 - 1990, correct me if I am wrong. The size of this watch is 35mm across, as big as Titoni Cosmo, Rado Voyager and high end Rolex. Uses ETA 2824-2 movement and working good. I have adjusted and tested by wearing for a week and it goes well, about +3 minutes gain. Original crystal. Excellent condition for a 20 year old watch. Identify your Rado

You need these things : eye loupe and case opener

Inspect the vintage Rado watch dial with a jeweler's loupe. At the top of the dial under 12 o'clock, the name "RADO" is embossed in raised capital letters. Models from the 1950s have "RADO" painted. The letters are grouped tightly but evenly spaced.
Examine the red and silver anchor symbol on 1960s and later models. The anchor should rotate. If it's fixed, the Rado may be a fake.
Examine the acrylic crystal on pre-1980s models. A tiny anchor logo should be in the center. A missing anchor may indicate a watchmaker replaced a damaged crystal at some time.
Examine with the loupe the model designation. A Purple Horse model is accompanied with a horse emblem. However, some counterfeits may use a Gazelle emblem from the Gazelle model on a Purple Horse model.
Inspect the crown, which is the slotted twisting knob on the case edge at 3 o'clock. A raised letter "R" is featured on all models manufactured until about 1958. A raised anchor symbol is used on post-1958 models. Keep in mind that it took Rado a couple of years to make a full transition from an "R" crown to an anchor crown. It's also common to replace crowns over the years. Finding a generic crown on an older Rado is common.
Use a case blade to pry open a Rado with a snap case back. Use a rubber jar opener to rotate counterclockwise a screw case back. Remove the case back and inspect with a jeweler's loupe the movement. The movement is a small engine that regulates the timing of the watch. All post-1957 Rado movements are clearly stamped with the "RADO" logo. All movement parts on the movement should have the same discolored aging on older models.
Examine the stainless steel bracelet. Original Rado bracelets have the "Novavit SA" triangle logo stamped on the inside. Replacement bracelets have no such logo.

Mechanical movements
Most watches have mechanical movements made largely by hand. These movements can require hundreds of hours of labor, and can only be made by watchmakers with many years of experience. The more complicated a mechanical watch is, the more functions it has, the more you will have to pay for it.

Material Plating
Some watches are plated with, or made entirely of precious metal: gold, or even platinum. These metals cost much more than plastic, stainless steel, or base metal. Furthermore, the gold used in Swiss watches is finer than that used in most jewelry sold in the US (18k vs. 14k) so the cost is even higher than you think. The cost is even more if the watch bracelet, as well as the case, is made of precious metal.

Water resistance
Water resistance also adds to the cost of a watch. Making a watch watertight requires gaskets perfectly fitted to keep out water and, often, a special type of crown that screws down into the case so water can’t seep in. The higher the level of water resistance (100m, 200m or whatever) the lower the manufacturing tolerance and the more expensive the case.

Limited Edition
Most Swiss companies have short production runs because they make watches for a narrower market than the firms in the orient. This allows them to provide more exclusive designs to customers, but also drives up manufacturing costs.

Material of Crystal
Just about all watch parts are available in a range of qualities. A watch made with a synthetic sapphire crystal, which is very difficult to scratch and highly durable will cost more than one with a plastic or a glass crystal.

Casing
Swiss watches in general have more unusual and complex case designs than less expensive watches. This means they are constructed of more parts, requiring a wider variety of dies to produce them and a more time consuming assembly process.

Others
Other features also affect a watch’s price. A smoothly finished, supple link bracelet will cost more than a roughly finished one. A double safety buckle on the band will add to the cost, as well as special finishes on the case or dial.

The crystal is the transparent protective covering that fits over the watch face, and is held in place by the bezel. It’s exposed to all manner of shocks and blows, so it should be as hard as possible. Softer materials scratch and break easily, making the watch less attractive and possibly unreadable. Pobeda Movement - by Andrew Babanin

The history of watchmaking in Russia is not very long. Before the October revolution Russia had to assemble watches from ready parts, imported from Switzerland. It was more profitable to assemble watches in Russia because of tax barriers. For example you pay 4,5 roubles for ready watch or even 6 roubles for the same watch in gold case. And you pay about 0,75 rouble for enormous qty of spare parts. Most famous brands of that period were Henry Mozer, Pavel Bure, Victor Gabu, Freimuth, Kiseleff, Telefon. Some local workshops produced wallclocks and alarm clocks. Nobody even thought about watchmaking formation in tzar Russia.

After the 1917 revolution, the whole watch industry became a part of the ‘Trust of Precision Mechanics’. They were watch enterprises, work shops, warehouses of watch parts and half-finished products which belonged to famous manufacturers, mentioned before. The first time the Soviets assembled watches from the spare parts, left in Russia after the revolution - there were Longines, Zenit, Omega, HM etc.

But to 1926 all warehouses were out of spare parts. Only in 1927th there was a decision to start watch producing in Russia. First Soviet watch had been manufactured in 1930. Primarily Russia used foreign bimetallic balance wheels, bouchons, screws. Then the Soviets began producing their own jewels and balances. I won't say it was a perfect quality - but it was fully made in Russia! This movement (pocket one) came up to WW2.

To start production, the four types of watches were chosen: a man's pocket watch with 15 jewels for the enterprises of the Narkomat (Ministry) of Means of Communications, a man's wrist-watch with 7 jewels for the Red Army; a man's pocket watch with 7 jewels and a ladies' wrist-watch with 15 jewels to sell in a market. For the prototype there had been chosen a French "Lip" movement R43 (43 mm in diameter).

In December, 1941 the most part of equipment and personnel was displaced to Zlatoust in Chelyabinsk region. Until nowadays it produces some stopwatches and AChS-11(AChS (aviation clock) - a chronograph with a second timer and with the movement of a flight time meter. Run duration by one wind up of the spring is 120 hours. Operative temperature range –60oC to +50oC. Produced in different variations from 1933), the modernized 1st MWF pre-war production. Then in 1942 another factory was evacuated in Chistopol. It was incipience of "Vostok" factory. Most of this equipment had left after the war in Chistopol. During the World War Two evacuated the plant stopped producing watches and worked for military aims. After the WW2 there were enough machinery and (more important) many watch specialists to found Chistopol watch plant with "Vostok" trade mark.

According to the agreement (reparations) after the WW2 Russia had got from Germany some equipment, tools, etc. Glashutte factories had lost almost all machinery. It was quite new equipment, so the Russians were able to produce modern movements of that time, using high class of finishing. The 1st Moscow Watch Factory (now Poljot) started producing K-26 ("Pobeda") in 1946. The "Pobeda" movement is based on the well known for us "Lip" R26. It's a VERY reliable movement. Many of them work for 40-50 years! Recently there was a joke among Russian watchmakers: You shouldn't clean "Pobeda" not to spoil a structure of dirt.

The first time "Pobeda" had been manufactured only at the 1st Moscow Watch Factory (1947-1953). Then it started producing more modern watches and displaced "Pobeda" to other factories. There were "Vostok", the 2nd Moscow Watch Factory, ZIM (Zavod Imeni Maslenikova - a watch factory in Samara) and "Raketa". Every manufacture had some changes with the movement. Vostok added calendar and two cap jewels to escape wheel, besides it began producing movements with Incabloc protection. "Raketa" started later, I'd never met "Raketas" with a calendar, but they added to the original movement a central jewel. ZIM produced the cheapest variant of base movement.

It can be funny, but nowadays "Pobeda" is still under production. I do not have any info what plant makes it (Maybe ZIM). The Chinese look like finishing and original design (15 jewels, no central jewel, no shock absorbing device) won't make any pleasure.
